If You Give a Crow a Cracker
If you give a crow a cracker, you had better have some cheese . . .
Hi Everyone!
It’s March 1st, which means time for another B-Side Story. This month is all about paying homage to one of my favourite authors, Laura Numeroff. Laura does a lot of wonderful, charitable work in the realm of children’s books and literacy. She has also written some of my all-time favourite stories, such as the classic, If You Give a Moose a Muffin.
This series of books includes giving a mouse a cookie, a pig some pancakes, a dog a donut, and a cat a cupcake. Each story follows the same idea – what happens when you give a creature one little snack? That first bite always leads to other adventures! In the end, every tale comes back to where it all began. To truly enjoy this month’s story, I encourage you to read this classic series. They are all available to listen-along on Youtube, or from your local library and bookstores.
If You Give a Crow a Cracker is my own ode to Numeroff, where this timeless tale meets a brand-new little critter with a love of salty snacks & shiny things . . .
If You Give a Crow a Cracker

Dedicated to my Grandpa Doug - Thank you for all your stories and tales, including one of my favourites. Every time I read about that moose and his beloved muffin, I think of you . . .

When a crow flies by your house,
she will probably swoop in to ask you for . . .
a cracker.
And, if you give this crow a cracker, she is very likely to ask you for some cheese.
When you give her some cheese, she will remember she is VERY lactose-intolerant.
So, she will ask you for some peanut butter instead.
When she eats the peanut butter, goopy globs will stick to the roof of her beak.
So, she will ask you for a glass of water.
When she gulps it all up, she will ask you if she can use the bathroom – immediately!
In the bathroom, she will catch a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror.
She will think, “Oh, my CROW! My feather’s are ruffled!”
So, she will ask you for a hairbrush.
You will go into your mother’s bedroom to get a comb.
The crow will see all your mother’s gorgeous, glittering jewellery.
Crows LOVE shiny things!
She will ask you for a sparkly necklace.
When she puts on the necklace, she will want to perform a fashion show – obviously!
So, she will ask you for some fashionable clothes - extra small, please!
When she’s looking through your closet, she will find your coin collection buried behind all your sweaters.
Since they are oh, so shiny, she will ask you for some silver coins.
And when you give her some coins, she will ask you to go to shopping.
On the way to the shops, she will fly past a park and she will want to play.
So, she will ask you to push her on a swing.
She will ask you to teeter while she totters.
She will ask you to shimmy down the slide,
and monkey around on the super shiny monkey bars.
After all that fun, she will be very tired.
She will ask you to go home for some rest.
At home, you will both need to build her a nest for napping.
So, she will ask you for some twigs.
You will go in the backyard and while you are gathering twigs, she will see some berries.
She will ask you for a bowlful.
When you are just about to head inside to fetch a bowl, she will see your tin tool shed, glistening in the sun.
So, she will ask you to go inside.
And inside, she will see a whole shed-full of shiny things!
She will ask you for all the bright, silver nails.
She will ask you for every sleek, silver shovel.
She will ask you for each glistening-grey tool.
You will give her everything on the list, a hefty heap of stuff.
So, she will have to ask you for a basket to carry it all.
You will go to get a basket from the corner of the shed, and out of the woodwork another little critter will appear . . . .
A MOUSE!
The crow will see the mouse.
And, when she sees the mouse, it will remind her of cheese.
And, chances are, if you give her some cheese, she will ask you for . . .
. . . a cracker!
The End . . .
P.S. If you let the mouse inside your house, he will most definitely ask you for a cookie. And, if you ever see a moose, make sure to hide your muffins . . .
